PUCL General Secretary Was Arrested For Facebook Posts

Ms. Jaya Vindhayala, general secretary of People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) was arrested on 13 May, 2013 by the Prakashan district police in Hyderabad, on the basis of a complaint made by an MLA in Chirala named Amanchi Krishna Mohan.

She was apprehended under section 66A of the IT Act, for allegedly distributing pamphlets making objectionable allegations against Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah and Chirala MLA before posting them online on Facebook. Ms Vindhayala was remanded to a 12 day judicial custody.

Following the arrest, a PIL was filed by PUCL in September, 2013 challenging the validity of Section 66A. (read petition here)

The petition is scheduled to be heard together with the petition of Shreya Singhal in April 2014.
