Essential tremor is a condition that causes parts of your body, most often your hands and arms, to shake. In its earlier stages, essential tremor is often minor and nothing more than an inconvenience or an annoyance. While essential tremor isn’t a dangerous condition, it can still keep you from taking care of yourself and living independently if the tremors become more severe.

People who have it may not be able to feed themselves or even cook because of how severely their hands shake. Others may not be able to write, dress, bathe or otherwise take care of themselves. Essential tremor causes parts of your body to shake when you try to use them.

Essential Tremor: Are you Self-Medicating with Alcohol?

If you undergo professional alcohol detox, you may be given certain medications to reduce symptoms, such as benzodiazepine, thiamine, or propranolol. Alcohol tremors are involuntary shaking/trembling of one or more parts of the body. Alcohol tremors are a response alcohol and essential tremor to alcohol withdrawal or alcohol use disorder/alcoholism. Alcohol shakes are typically present in the hands, but they may also appear in the arms or legs. Alcohol tremors can be debilitating and can make doing simple daily tasks much more difficult.

How does essential tremor affect my body?

Aside from alcohol/OA intake, pharmaceuticals (beta blockers and anticonvulsants) are the most commonly prescribed ET drugs. However, fewer than 50% of those who suffer from ET obtain the desired relief from such medications, or do not like their side effects. If primidone or propranolol are not effective by themselves, a combination of both may provide relief for some patients. The Guillain–Mollaret triangle means the loop from the dentate nucleus to the red nucleus to inferior olivary (IO) nucleus to the dentate nucleus via the cerebellar cortex, which also participates in the pathogenesis of ERMDs such as ET and MD. Terminology

Alcohol also antagonizes N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) at receptor level, thereby depressing CNS tone. Over a long duration of use, it then up regulates the number of NMDA receptors as well as increasing the amount of glutamate to compensate for greater inhibition. Compared with those who had not developed tremor, those who did were significantly more likely to have been drinking regularly and for longer. The exact cause of ET is not known, but doctors think it might be caused by a problem in either the cerebellum or the brain stem.

If you have ET, then your children will have a 50 percent chance of getting the disorder as well. Therefore, medical professionals do not believe that alcohol use impacts whether or not someone gets ET. Alcohol can imitate or increase the effects of GABA, a neurotransmitter that calms your neuron activity.4 Drinking to excess can therefore over-inhibit your system—causing you to black out, feel numb, or experience euphoria.

Other Medications Used to Treat Essential Tremor

Besides, neuroimaging studies, as a non-invasive approach of research, have also highlighted the morphologic abnormalities in the cerebellum. Atrophic changes in different lobules of the cerebellum, including gray matter and white matter, are revealed in previous studies (29, 30). Undoubtedly, evidence from most published studies indicates the critical role of the cerebellum in the pathophysiology of ERMDs. Several
studies have indicated that alcohol can suppress essential

researchers assessed the walking patterns of 16 patients
with ET and 11 age-matched controls without ET before
and 30-minutes after each subject consumed a small dose
of alcohol. Measurements included the number of missteps
(taking steps outside specified boundaries marked on a
treadmill), ataxia score (a ratio measuring the regularity
of walking strides), and tremor score (a rating of tremor
severity in patients with ET).

So if you recently stopped drinking and are experiencing this involuntary shaking and trembling of your hands, it’s important to get them treated as quickly as possible before the tremors progress and alcohol withdrawal becomes severe. Ethanol is able to antagonize the effect of harmaline through impairment of NMDA-mediated glutamate transmission (91). Downregulation of EAAT2 and AMPAR (92) among chronic alcohol assumption also suggests their possible role for ethanol responsiveness (Figure 3), but more studies are in need for confirm their functions. As the main inhibitory system in the nervous system, especially in cerebellum-related circuits, the reduction of GABAergic inhibitory function contributes to various ERMDs, such as ET, MD, progressive myoclonic epilepsy (44), and dystonia (57). Thus, GABA pathways were first linked to ethanol responsiveness, in which GABA receptors, including GABAA receptors and GABAB receptors, play a critical role.
