IIT Professor Arrested For Sending “unwanted” Text messages

Lingaraj Sahoo, an IIT Professor was arrested on 13 August, 2013 by the Amingaon police under Sections 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and Section 66A of the IT Act, on the basis of a complaint made by an IIT student.

Sahoo had allegedly sent “unwanted” text messages to one of his female students. In her complaint the student had alleged Sahoo sent her multiple text messages from his mobile phone with marriage proposals even after she requested him not to do so.

He was later released on bail.
